Three Lines, by George Rickey

This kinetic sculpture consists of three thin segments of braised and polished stainless steel, which move in vertical configurations gracefully through the air. The slow meandering of this piece drew my attention within the sculpture park in Lincoln, as I became disparately mesmerized by its elegant movements.

Reflex, by Michael Hansel

This large stainless steel sculpture sits prominently in the sculpture park, suggesting natural movements of curvilinear form in juxtaposition to its mechanical presence. The branching arms of the piece reference its location among a backdrop of trees, yet the choices in material quality and the open-ended voids present at the tips of each limb suggests something much more industrial. I was drawn to this inherent contrast wresting within the piece as well as its muscularly contorted presence within the forested landscape.

Digital Media - Final Project Proposal

My final exploration will continue an exploration into the themes of materiality and memory. The concept will begin with the understanding of a found object. This object will be recognizable and familiar in character. The proposal seeks to facilitate a new understanding in how we can observe, perceive, and relate to this object. Once this form is understood, it ill be de-materialized and reformed to create a new artifact completely. This process of re-invention will play on overarching ideas of sustainability and material re-purposing.

The idea of material reinvention is an intriguing way of approaching art and design. In the 21st century, it becomes increasingly relevant to consider new ways to reuse and re-purpose old objects. How can these sustainable concerns be beautifully expressed through art? Digital media affords the capability to document a process of reinvention in a controlled and potentially abstract way.

The process by which I will present this exploration are drawn from the earliest days of film and the works of icons in digital media such as the Lumiere Brothers and Georges Melies. Through the use of stop-motion filming technique, object reinvention can be explored and manipulated through the camera frame in a similar allusive technique as used in the days of early film.

Databases are defined as a collection of information. How can they be ordered, how can the information they hold be processed, and how can their analysis be repurposed? Can a database be used to define a culture, as a social tool? The information provided by these digital collections of media can be reduced to a single narrative or stream of experiences. The additive phenomenon of compiling this resource as it occurs over time creates a process which catalogs the chronological trajectory of a series of events and experiences as seen through the eyes of the contributors.

This digital frontier may not only be categorized as collections or databases defined by single streams of personal narratives, but an additional method of experiencing digital media may occur in direct correspondence to the structured algorithm of a computer program. The program/user relationship creates a second level of digital interaction and informational processing. In this scenario, the user inputs information into the digital interface similar to the database progression, yet in this instance the computer algorithm responds to the user’s input through prescribed calculated outcomes. . As opposed to the database logic, the algorithm displays a new response or experience to the user.

The essential component to the database is the user interface. This digital simplification provides a translation to the underlying logic of the corresponding database, allowing users to interact with this virtual realm of media in an efficient manner. This interface provides the framework for the user’s digital narrative or recorded experience with a particular database. A “hyper-narrative” can be defined as a combination of various trajectories through a database. The recorded path of a user’s exploration through an interface begins to describe a story about digital culture or an “interactive narrative.”

Storage media also plays a vital role in the realization of the database. The modern portability of storage media provides a new level of accessibility to the contents of these digital collections. Databases of virtual information and media provide an instantly accessible encyclopedia of both personal and universal forms of readily available data to the modern user. The accessibility of this data is fostered through the use of contemporary user interfaces, which make collections manageable and algorithms enjoyable to experience.

Photo
